By default, gift cards created through the GV- gift card app do not have an expiration date. This is due to legal requirements designed to protect consumers. Under U.S. law, a gift card must remain valid for at least five years from the date it is activated. In addition, certain states enforce their own regulations, which may provide additional protections or impose specific requirements.
Despite this default setting, merchants may choose to define an expiration date if it is legally permitted in their country or state. Because gift card regulations can vary by location—covering aspects such as validity periods and tax obligations—it is strongly recommended that you consult a local tax advisor or legal professional before enabling expiration dates.
Setting a Gift Card Expiration Date
You can configure gift card expiration settings directly from your Shopify admin by following the steps below:
Navigate to Shopify Admin
Go to Payments > Settings > Gift Card Expiration
Select and save your preferred expiration timelineOnce this setting is applied, all newly issued gift cards will automatically follow the configured expiration policy.
