Why can’t merchants see the full gift card code?

Gift cards on Shopify are treated as a form of currency and are therefore subject to strict security and privacy controls. To protect both merchants and customers from unauthorized use or fraud, Shopify limits access to full gift card codes.

Visibility of Gift Card Codes

By design, full gift card codes are visible only to the end recipient (customer). From the merchant’s perspective, Shopify displays only the last four characters of each gift card within the admin dashboard. This limitation applies to all Shopify gift cards and is not specific to GV.

GV follows Shopify’s platform rules and security requirements. As a result, merchants are unable to:

• View full gift card codes within the GV app

• Export or download full gift card codes directly

• Access gift card codes through self-service tools

Reason for This Limitation

Gift card codes are considered sensitive financial data. Restricting access helps prevent:

• Unauthorized redemption

• Accidental exposure of codes

• Fraud or misuse by unintended parties

Allowing unrestricted access to full gift card codes at the merchant level would introduce significant security risks and would not align with Shopify’s compliance standards.

GV’s Approach and Support

Due to these security considerations, GV does not currently provide a feature that allows merchants to view or export full gift card codes within the app.
